How to turn leggings into shorts

Do you have favourite pair of leggings or harems that you absolutely love on your little one but they’re now to short? Do you know it’s super easy to get more wear from them? I’m going to teach you how.

So your little one has had a growth spurt, and all of a sudden their leggings or harems are to short in the leg but still fit in the waist 😭 all is not lost, it’s not time to sell them on or put them in the charity bag yet.

It’s actually super easy to turn them into shorts, all you need is a pair of scissors, a needle and thread. You do not need to know how to sew trust me.

Step one:

Put the leggings/harems on your child, and measure what length you would like the shorts to be. I simple pen dot or chalk mark will be fine. Take them back off and lay them on a flat surface folded in half so one leg is on top of the other. (Make sure you can see the mark you made)

Step two:

Measure 4cm or if you don’t have a ruler to hand roughly the width of three fingers. Cut along that line both legs at the same time to ensure they’re even. Now it’s time to fold. I prefer to iron each fold but it can be done without. I fold the bottom of the leg up half of the extra we left on, iron this down and repeat on both legs. I then fold it up one more turn to the mark I decided would be the right length and then iron flat again. By doing two folds you don’t have any rough edges on show. You can stop at this point if they have been ironed well, the folds will hold with leggings that are tight.

Step three:

Making sure those folds don’t come down, you don’t need to be an expert with a sewing needle, you can do it even if you’ve never seen before. Take a needle and a thread that matches the colour of the leggings, usually the inside of a printed fabric is white, and you will be sewing on the fold. Cut the thread around 30cm or longer and thread through the eye of your needle.

Now take your shorts and on the inside edge and outside edge of the fold we’re going to make a small tack stitch. Start with the needle on the inside of the leg and push through the fabric, make sure you leave a tail of thread on the inside, this will make it easier to tie off. Next go from the outside of the fold to the inside and repeat 5-6 times ending with the needle on the inside. Take the needle off the thread tie the two loose ends and snip the excess and taaa daaa your folds won’t be able to unfold.

I hope this helps you guys get longer out of your beloved leggings, and don’t forget if you need any help you can always drop me a message where I can walk you through.
